April 1, 2012 by · No Comments · Special Events

Congratulations to the newspaper staff for finishing the first student-run edition of the school newspaper.  As we promised our readers, here’s a picture of Mr. Grimsey in his pajamas.

Mr. Grimsey reads The Polar Express to the third grade on Dec. 21.

This photo was taken the week before winter vacation, at a reading of The Polar Express in Rm. 201.  If you enjoy Mr. Grimsey’s fashion sense, be sure to visit this blog again during reading week.  During the NECAP award ceremony on March 28, Ms. Garriott hinted that the principal might have something special planned for the week of April 9-13.

From what I’ve heard the students in Fifth grade are having a great work out with Ms. Janice. Ms. Janice volunteered to set up a team with sixteen players made up of Fifth Graders to play basketball against other Fifth Graders from some of the city schools. Ms.Janice is the Head Chef in our kitchen and coordinates every meal in our school.
Stay tuned and Go Eagles! Go Eagles

This past week we built and designed our gingerbread village. We had some help from Ms. Walsh, Mrs. Benassi, and Ms. Driscoll. On Thursday we learned about building our gingerbread houses with royal icing and lots of candy. This week we were reading about artists and inventors in Reading. We read about Leonardo Da Vinci and how he had to design and use scale to build a horse statue for a Duke in Italy.

Rm. 205 attends press conference with mayor

December 22, 2011 by · No Comments · Special Events

Today Rm. 205 walked to the Smith Hill Community Library for a press conference with Mayor Angel Taveras. The Mayor announced a deal that would help keep the library open in the future.

The mayor speaks to Ms. Read's class, as well as local media, politicians, and library leaders.

Until today, the library building belonged to a private nonprofit organization.  The organization had talked about closing the building because of the costs.  However, the City is going to buy the buildings instead.  Now, the Mayor said he and the City Council will keep the doors open and books on the shelves.

After the press conference, Ms. Read’s class got to take a picture with the mayor, meet the President of the Library Board, and check out a few books, too.

Henry R., Daniel D., Christopher S., and Alexis E. meet Library Board President Marcus Mitchell.

Read more about this event at the Providence Journal, WPRI, or the Mayor’s website.

Partnership with local bookstore generates great deals

December 4, 2011 by · No Comments · Parent opportunities

This year, Harry Kizirian Elementary School is partnering with Books on the Square to offer books at 30% off their regular price–just in time for the holidays.  Order forms are going home with children this week.  Parents will be able to choose from a list of books selected by the school librarian.  They can send cash or checks to school with their children and they will receive the books before vacation begins.

The titles on this year’s list include the newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as well as “read-a-likes” Big Nate, Fashion Kitty, and Danny Dragonbreath.

There are books especially for children who are learning to read and easy chapter books series for kids who just need practice.  Most books are paperbacks that cost between $2.50 and $10.00, but there are a few big ticket items for parents who want to get their children something extra special, like a dragon pop-up book.

The order form lists the titles of all the available books, but if you want to know a little more about each book–and why it made the list–you can watch this slideshow, created by the school librarian.

Click on the picture to learn more about the titles you can buy through this special partnership. (Above: Two pages from Superhero ABC by Bob McLoed.)

Best Book Reviews of the Month: November

December 2, 2011 by · No Comments · Classroom Updates

Students in grades 3 to 5 have been writing reviews of books in the library catalog.  By adding their opinions, they help other students decide whether or not to read a book.  Below are some of the funniest and most helpful reviews out for the 75 reviews that were written in the month of November.  Please note that students don’t have time to edit and rewrite their reviews!  They just post their thoughts at the end of the class after they pick out books.

Out of the 75 reviews written in November, only three were critical!  These two reviews show how helpful it can be when someone shares that they didn’t like a book.
